Dental Laser Treatment

At Waterford Perio we have 2 types of Laser Dental Treatment; LANAP® Protocol and LAPIP® Protocol. These treatments are both carried out by the PerioLase MVP-7 dental laser. This approach aims to destroy inflamed tissue and bacteria without harming healthy tissue.

Dr. Melissa Lee here at Waterford Perio is the first and currently the only LANAP® certified clinician in Ireland.

LANAP® Protocol

The LANAP® Protocol is dental laser treatment for gum disease. It is proven to regenerate new attachment for teeth affected by gum disease. It is proven to regenerate new attachment which consists of cementum, periodontal ligament, and bone. There is no cutting or sewing with this procedure. For this reason, there is less pain and discomfort during and after the procedure, compared to that of traditional gum surgery.

The laser works at a specific wavelength that attacks bacteria deep within the pockets of the gums, without damaging healthy tissue. Most patients will notice a faster healing time compared with other surgical options and reduced recovery period.

Anyone that is experiencing moderate to severe gum disease can benefit from the LANAP® Protocol. Due to its methods, it is also suitable for those who are on medications such as blood thinners, where conventional surgery has more risks. It is also a great option for those who are uncomfortable and fearful of traditional cut and sew surgery.

This type of treatment normally needs two sessions, with each session lasting approximately 2 hours. One half of the mouth is treated in the first session, while the other half is treated in a second session approximately one week later. This is followed by regular three monthly maintenance cleaning visits at least for the first year following laser treatment.

LAPIP® Protocol

LAPIP® protocol is a dental laser treatment that helps save your ailing dental implant. LAPIP® can be used to treat peri-implantitis. In this procedure, the laser vaporises inflammatory bacteria, diseased tissue, and titanium corrosion in the soft tissue.

With the LAPIP® Protocol, no foreign materials or growth factors are used. Instead, due to the reduction of the inflammation caused by bacteria, healthy tissue and bone start to regenerate. This stabilises the dental implant site.

Studies have shown that 95% of failing implants treated with LAPIP® Protocol have reintegrated in the pocket and stabilised due to bone re-growth.

LAPIP® Protocol laser treatment is usually completed in one sitting. This is then followed by regular three monthly maintenance cleaning visits at least for the first year following laser treatment.
